Darkness was always a problem for me living in Central Alberta, where the dark shadows made for difficult days. However, Carole White told me a few weeks ago that she and Tony would always look for the one time during the day when the sun would come out - then, they would call the other. I too look for the little glimpses of light amidst the despair that sometimes sets in! Those glimpses can indeed warm the soul.

As a community of the faithful called the church, we are always meant to function that way wherever we are. When we are in the shopping line, or waiting for traffic to clear. We bring all of these realities together when we gather for Word and Sacrament and then we are sent out to be the body of Christ all over again. The hard part is always being the body in all that we do. Yet, God's love is with us no matter what and will not be taken away. That is a unity that is uncontestable.

I love your question about what unites us. In the gospel lesson, the focus for all of us is Jesus and what it means to follow him. It is powerful that we come from many different directions with many different callings in life, but we are able to walk in his ways and find some unity with each other. Unity is not "sameness"! We have our opinions and experiences and beliefs that may be different. But Christ died for each one of us. He offers the same forgiveness to all people. God is merciful as God chooses. Those are pretty powerful unifiers!

I think the 3rd question is hard. I'm pretty attached to lots of people that I would have a really hard time leaving if I had to in order to "follow Jesus". Not to mention a comfortable lifestyle. I have struggled with this, feeling guilty (and glad that I haven't had to make the choice). But I was reading a book last night that discussed this guilt/shame I feel. Perhaps I should realize this is part of my imperfection. I can never be perfect. That's where God's grace & forgiveness & acceptance comes in. Looking at it that way, today I'm feeling less guilty. Ready to do my best, with Jesus at my side.
