Art as Prayer: Prayer as Art |
Susan Schenk
A departure from my usual work, these mixed media pieces reflect my journeys in prayer and spiritual exploration. As part of West Linn Lutheran Church’s first Artist in Residency Program, I’m sharing my works which are crammed with spiritual symbolism for me. They bubble up from my subconscious when I give myself permission to be open to whispers and nudges from the spiritual world. I don’t question where they come from, or struggle to make them meaningful to others. My prayers often start as a one sided conversation until I move that energy into making art. Then, my prayers are not just words sent into the ethers, but confirmation that I am connected to something greater than myself. Inspiration flows through me and out my hands. I encourage you to examine how, where, when and why you pray, and to whom you pray. Then take your answers and just create, without explanation, judgement or apology. |
