Spaces, especially if there is an event, invite people to photograph others or the scene itself. Someone always wants to record the event with friends and family in the foreground. The fascinating part of this activity lies in the solemnity of the photographer while taking the photograph, the antics of those being photographed and the formality of the interchange. In the midst of the places' activities the mood of the photographed ranges from funeral to hilarious. My excitement comes from anticipating these interactions and working quickly to position myself to record each interchange. These instants in time accumulate into a delightful record of one of "the most popular forms of amusement". |
Coffee Creek Quilters
The Coffee Creek Quilters group has taught quilting classes to women incarcerated at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville, Oregon, since 2002. Many have experienced difficult life situations including homelessness, substance abuse and family violence. CCQ provides a positive, hands-on opportunity to learn skills such as patience, problem solving and quality work. Eighty students in four classes participate each week with a long waiting list to join the classes. Each student makes three quilts over 18 to 24 months. Every year nearly 150 quilts are donated to organizations such as hospitals, domestic violence shelters and programs for foster children. Students can keep their third quilt or give it to a loved one. |
