Holy Week 2022 - All services are livestreamed except Holy Wednesday

Holy Week Worship

The actions and events in the last week of Jesus' earthly life and ministry are of such great significance that they make up a major portion of the Gospels and Christians have come to refer to them as “Holy Week”. For centuries, Christians have remembered them by gathering on many of the days of Holy Week to tell the stories and engage in symbolic actions, thereby, walking with Christ through the events  . . . as Christ walks with us and connects us anew to their significance, giving new meaning and purpose to our livers.

 HOLY WEDNESDAY // April 13 // 7pm.
For centuries the oil used for anointing in Baptism and Prayer for Healing has been blessed during Holy Week—in the shadow of the cross—remembering the promise that “by Christ's wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5 & 1 Peter 2:24). We gather by candlelight—a reminder of God's Healing Light—for a Service of Healing. Our Pastors will provide individual prayer with the laying on of hands and anointing with oil for those who would like.

 MAUNDY THURSDAY // April 14 // 7pm.
“Maundy” comes from the Latin word, “mandatum”, which means “command”, and refers to the commands Jesus gave this night after he washed the disciple's feet, saying, “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you”  (John 13: 34), and when he shared the bread and cup at the Passover Meal, saying, “This is my body . . . and my blood. Do this to remember me.” We gather in the shadow of the cross for a Service of Anointing and Holy Communion—sacred expressions of Divine Love. The service ends with the Stripping of the Altar and prayer—a reminder of Jesus' betrayal and arrest in the Garden after the Last Supper.

 GOOD FRIDAY // April 15 // 7pm.
For centuries Christians have gathered on the day of Jesus' crucifixion to remember the last words of Jesus on the cross-- seven sayings according to the four Gospels. We extinguish a candle and pray and sing after each saying, as the sanctuary grows darker. We call this Friday “Good” because of the promise, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it” (John 1: 5).  “Behold,” we are invited, “the life-giving cross on which was hung the salvation”--the salving and healing-- “of the whole world!” The service ends dramatically, with a loud “Closing of the Book”-- a symbol of Christ being sealed in the tomb. And we wait . . . for “the third day”.

 EASTER SUNDAY // April 17 // 8:30 & 10:30 am.
We gather on “the third day” to celebrate the resurrection with joyous singing and shouting, “Alleluia! Christ is risen!” (Release the boxed-up butterflies!) We remember that we have been joined to the death and resurrection of Christ and celebrate what that means for our lives today and on the last day. We celebrate Holy Communion knowing that Christ the Crucified and Risen One is present “in the breaking of the bread”-- the way many disciples experienced the presence of Christ on the first Easter (Luke 24:35) We welcome all those who have been invited by others to the Table. Eat and drink Easter peace and Easter joy and Easter love! Brunch is served between services—more opportunities to eat and drink Easter peace and joy and love!
