Short Course: “Unpacking White Privilege”
This 3-session short course focuses on understanding white privilege and “the important work of making the church less harmful”. It draws from an article by that title in Living Lutheran January 2020. Email Pastor Donna with your questions and interest. More resources on white privilege and anti-racism work can be found on the RIC: Reconciling in Christ page. |

WHAT WE HAVE BEEN LEARNING ABOUT WHITE PRIVILEGE
-Watched “13th” documentary; tied together power with history; mass incarceration as even recent problem; Brian Stevenson, Equal Justice Institute; I think I get it
– who’s doing the most tangible things today? Fr. Greg Boyle in LA, book: “Barking to the Choir” – “radical kinship”; hope in kinship!
-Some people hard to have a conversation because they don’t seem to want to accept that there is white privilege; how have those conversations
-“I can’t do anything about that”: being born white; what I carry in the invisible knapsack; use power and privilege to make change; release that guilt and burden and move on
-“How to Be an Antiracist” workbook by Ibram X. Kendi; summary of each chapter and questions to help work through; overwhelmed by our history; why is our American history so white….! Exercise at anti-racism workshop: white men in front had no idea of what was going on behind them; the black women at the back of the line saw all that was going on in front of them; “white exceptionalism”
-“steep hike” the last few months in our family journey; intersection with disability and other rights; moved to action; join in student protests;how to be supportive of BLM movement without detracting; speak up for others when they need us to
-Reading “White Fragility” with study guide; we are racists – embrace and understand; learned a lot from working with people of color without realizing it; human desire to have needs met; in this life together trying to figure it out
-Trying to catch up; feeling guilt
-Movie ("Ruby Bridges") about one black girl going to white school with federal marshals in sixties; facing hate; her praying for them as she went along; granddaughter adopted and in relationship with our family; 5-yr-old granddaughter: racism = being mean to people who because the look different from you; doesn’t remember a time without her cousin; schooling advantages because of her adopted parents;

“LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT” A Study on the Book of Romans In our first session we learn about Paul - and how he became an “Apostle”. Next we trace a few of his ‘missionary journeys’ to get a glimpse of the breadth of work Paul did within the Gentile world. We also talk a little about some of the “orbits” existing during Paul’s day, in terms of belief systems. We begin our work grounded in Paul’s identity in order to better understand the nuances of his work called the Letter to the Romans. Class created by Pastor Tim. Session #1 - Who is the Apostle Paul: Background to Paul Acts 9; Galatians 1:13-16 Session #2 – Structure of Romans/Central Theme of Romans.
